The Hidden Force of Imagination and Willpower

3 important points to nail down:

  1. Our beliefs are largely driven by what we are imaging to be true. Our imagination can be driven by our past experiences, preconceptions, values and existing stimulus
  2. Willpower can be a force born from our beliefs and our desires
  3. When desire is focused on changing something, if that something is in opposition to our imagined belief the result is inner conflict, stress, frustration, etc. -> to reduce conflict, stress and frustration you MUST first start with the imagination and begin to imagine the desired outcome - only once the imagined outcome has been felt should the willpower be brought back in to play.

Example:

Sitting in bed and you can't sleep. What do you do? You try harder to sleep. And what happens? You get more of what you don't want, you can't sleep even more.

You are "willing" yourself to sleep through the command of "Urgh, I've gotta sleep!" Which is born from the imagined belief of "I can't sleep"

IMAGINATION WILL ALWAYS WIN!

What to do? STOP. Let go of the will and relax the body. Engage the imagination and start to imagine yourself sleeping. Imagine the feelings of restfulness, the feelings of deep relaxation - keep the will out of picture. There should be NO EFFORT, only imagination.

This method has never failed me in falling asleep.

We'll cover this in more detail in the chapter on imagination and willpower. If you have any questions feel free to post in the comments section!
